No Harley-Davidson family has been built in as many wheel configurations as the Softail. Since 2000, Softails have left the factory with front wheels from 16 to 21 inches and rear tires from a narrow 130 to a 240. The same model name has covered very different motorcycles, and the Softail chassis itself was redesigned twice: in 2007 for the wider rear tire, and completely in 2018. That is why "what fits my Softail?" is never a one-line answer, and why your model code and model year matter more than the name on the tank.
The tables below list the factory wheel and tire sizes for Softail models from 2000 to 2026, together with the largest rim and tire that can be fitted without modifying the motorcycle's chassis.
How to read these tables
Rim sizes are shown as diameter x width in inches: a 16 x 3 rim is 16 inches in diameter and 3 inches wide at the bead seat. Tire sizes are in the standard metric format: a 130/90-16 tire is 130mm wide, with a sidewall height 90 percent of that width, for a 16-inch rim. (For a full explanation, see How to Read Motorcycle Tire and Rim Sizes.)
"Max without modification" means the largest combination that fits the stock chassis, with no raked triple tree, swingarm change or frame work. It does not mean nothing else changes. A taller front wheel still needs a fender solution, the calipers must still be checked and shimmed, and a different rear wheel usually needs attention to pulley spacing and belt alignment. Treat these figures as the practical upper limit for a bolt-in upgrade, not a guarantee that every tire of that size will clear every bike. Tire dimensions vary between manufacturers, so always check clearance.

Front wheels: Softail models, 2018–2026
In 2018, Harley-Davidson replaced both the Dyna and the original Softail with an all-new Softail chassis. These models share almost nothing with the earlier Softails in wheel fitment.

What the tables tell you
Read down the columns and a few clear patterns emerge. They explain most of the Softail upgrade questions we hear.
A 21-inch front fits almost every Softail. Across both generations, nearly every Softail model can take a 21 x 3.5 front wheel with a 120/70-21 tire without chassis modification. That includes the 16-inch-front Heritage, Deluxe, Fat Boy and Slim, the 19-inch-front Street Bob and Low Rider, and the 18-inch-front Fat Boy and Sport Glide. The exceptions are the Rocker, which keeps a 19-inch front, and the 2018-and-later Fat Bob, whose front end is built around its fat 16-inch tire. A 21-inch front stands taller than the stock front, so it needs a fender solution: a lift bracket or a 21-inch fender. On Softails with an engine guard, a lifted fender brings a risk of contact on a hard bottoming bump. For what a 21-inch front does to ride height, fender clearance and steering, see Sizing and Fitment: Front vs Rear, 16, 18 and 21 Explained.
2007 was the big rear-wheel year for the original Softail. Until 2006, most Softails ran a narrow 16-inch rear with a 130, 140 or 150 series tire, and the largest bolt-in rear was an 18 x 4.25 with a 160/60-18. The Softail Standard family moved to a 200 rear in 2006, and in 2007 Harley-Davidson redesigned the Softail frame and swingarm around a 17 x 6 wheel with a 200/55-17 tire, first fitted to the Fat Boy and the Softail Standard family, and later to the Cross Bones. Those 200-tire Softails can take a 17 x 6.25 with a 210/50-17. The Heritage, Deluxe and Slim kept their narrow rear tires on the same chassis.
The 240 Softails form their own group. The Rocker introduced a 240/40-18 rear in 2008. The Breakout carried it from 2013, and from 2018 the Fat Boy and FXDR joined it. Every 240 Softail can take an 18 x 8.5 wheel with a 250/40-18. This is the widest bolt-in upgrade on any Harley-Davidson in these tables, and on these motorcycles the belt runs closer to the tire than anywhere else, so pulley spacing and belt clearance deserve particular care (see Rear Pulley Spacers and Belt Alignment).
2018 started again from scratch. The 2018 Softail chassis replaced both the Dyna and the original Softail. Its wheel fitment has nothing in common with the earlier bikes: different axles, spacers, brakes and swingarms. A wheel for a 2017 Fat Boy will not fit a 2018 Fat Boy. Within the new chassis, the rear wheels fall into three clear groups:
- Narrow-tire models (Heritage Classic, Deluxe, Street Bob, Softail Standard) run a 16 x 3 rear with a 140 or 150 series tire, and can take an 18 x 4.25 with a 160/60-18.
- 180 models (Low Rider, Sport Glide, Fat Bob) run a 16 x 5 rear with a 180/70-16, and can take an 18 x 5.5 with a 200/50-18.
- 240 models (Fat Boy, Breakout, FXDR) run an 18 x 8 rear with a 240/40-18, and can take an 18 x 8.5 with a 250/40-18.
The 2018-and-later Slim is the one exception among the narrow-tire bikes: its swingarm allows an 18 x 5.5 rear with a 180/55-18.
The overall diameter barely changes. As with Touring models, the largest bolt-in combinations are carefully matched in height to the stock tires. At the rear, a 150/80-16 stands about 25.4 inches tall and a 160/60-18 about 25.6 inches. A 180/70-16 and a 200/50-18 both stand about 25.9 inches. A 200/55-17 is about 25.7 inches and a 210/50-17 about 25.3 inches. A 240/40-18 is about 25.6 inches and a 250/40-18 about 25.9 inches. In every case, the larger rim and wider tire change the look and the footprint without meaningfully changing ride height or geometry. This is plus-sizing, and it is why these upgrades are bolt-in changes rather than chassis changes. (See How to Read Motorcycle Tire and Rim Sizes.)
Engines changed; wheel sizes did not. From 2018 to 2026, Softails moved from the 107 to the 114 and then, in 2025, to the 117-cubic-inch Milwaukee-Eight, and the lineup narrowed. The Slim and Sport Glide ended after 2021 and the FXDR after 2020; the Breakout took a break for 2021 and 2022 and returned in 2023 as the Breakout 117; the Softail Standard ended after 2024 and the Fat Bob after 2024. By 2025 and 2026 the Softail range was six models: Street Bob, Heritage Classic, Fat Boy, Breakout, Low Rider S and Low Rider ST. Through all of those changes, each model kept the same wheel and tire sizes it had in 2018. Confirm the details for your exact year, such as ABS and rotor fitment, but the sizes themselves are unchanged.
Before you order
The tables are a starting point, not the final word. Softail model names have been reused across very different motorcycles: a "Fat Boy," a "Softail Standard" or a "Heritage" can mean three or four different chassis depending on the year. Confirm your model code and model year from your registration, and remember that a previous owner may have changed things. When in doubt, call us and we will confirm the correct wheel for your motorcycle.
